I ran a GC company with my dad for years. Estimates, retainage, callbacks, guys who didn't show up Monday — I did all of it. Now I run the website, the Google profile, the reviews and the hiring for a handful of contractors around here, so they can stay on the tools.
No deck. No contract to read. I'll tell you what I'd fix first.
Every contractor I talk to is stuck on one of these. They need opposite fixes, which is why generic marketing doesn't move either one.
Work comes from referrals and it's good work — but it's lumpy. When it dries up you're bidding against guys who are cheaper than you, and the customers who do find you online are seeing four reviews from 2019 and a website that hasn't been touched since your nephew built it.
You've got more work than crew. Every job you turn away is money you already earned the right to. Indeed sends you people who've never held a shovel, and the guys you actually want already have jobs — so nobody's looking at your listing.
Every contractor in this county has been pitched by six agencies and burned by two. I know, because I was the one getting pitched.
What none of those agencies had: somebody who wrote the estimates, chased the retainage, did the callbacks and hired the crew. I'm not going to ask you what a change order is. I'm not going to send you a report full of words you don't care about.
I take one contractor per trade, per service area. That means when I'm working with you, I'm not working with the guy across town — and it means I can only take on a handful of people. That's the whole business model, and it's why I'd rather work with people I already know or who came referred.
Start at the bottom. Most people do the build first, see whether they like working with me, and go from there. No pressure to move up and no hard feelings if you don't.
Delivered in 2 weeks. Yours to keep either way.
First 90 days, then month to month.
For adding a truck or a crew.
Every marketing company in town sells you leads. If you're already turning work down because you're short-handed, more leads is just a longer list of people to disappoint. So I do the other side of it too — and honestly, it's the part I'm best at.
They already have a job. They're on Facebook, they know which shops are worth working for, and they'll move for the right one. That's where I put you.
Name, phone, trade, years, when you can start. No resume upload — guys aren't building a PDF on their phone at lunch, and you lose every one who tries.
You talk to the ones worth talking to. You don't spend your Saturday calling people who were never going to show up to the interview.
Fair. What's one job worth to you, average? If this brings you one extra job a quarter it's paid for itself. If it can't clear that bar for your business, I don't want your money either — I'll tell you that on the call instead of selling you something that won't work.
Good — those are the best leads there are, and I'm not going to tell you to stop. But those referrals Google you before they call. Right now a lot of them are finding four reviews from 2019 and deciding to call the other guy your buddy mentioned. You're leaking work you already earned.
What was your cost per booked job with them? Most guys can't answer that, and that's exactly the problem — you were paying for activity nobody tied to a number. Judge me on three: calls, booked jobs, applicants. If those don't move in 90 days, you walk.
The build is live in two weeks and you'll see that immediately. Google takes longer — realistically 60 to 90 days before rankings move, which is exactly why the first term is 90 days and not 30. Anybody promising you page one in a month is lying to you.
Photos from jobs — just text them to me. Twenty minutes on the phone once a month. And access to your Google profile. That's it. If I need more than that I'm doing my job wrong.
After the first 90 days it's month to month — tell me and we're done, no fee, no runaround. The website is yours either way, including the domain. I'd rather you leave clean and say something decent about me than feel stuck.
Tell me what you build, where you build it, and whether you need more calls or more guys. I'll tell you what I'd fix first and roughly what it's worth. If it's not a fit, I'll say that too.
